How can I cover 1970's Herman Miller fiberglass dining chairs without painting them? I'm a college student living in an apartment that came with a set of the aforementiond chairs. The problem with them is that they are HIDEOUSLY yellow. My landlord says that we aren't allowed to paint them because they are fiberglass and they will chip away quickly and look even worse than they do now (if that's even possible). Anything we do to the chairs must be reversible. Is there any kind of special fabric we could put on them, or does anyone have any other ideas? They are also sort of oddly shaped. Here is a link to a chair that looks similar to mine: except for that the ones in my apartment are WAY more yellow. Help! I WILL award points to the best answer, so please try to provide serious and helpful solutions.

cheezy replied: "make some slip covers for them---hotels use them all the time for weddings & banquets to cover up unattractive chairs"

eskie lover replied: "Oh yes, I remember these! Since they are fiberglass and you need to be able to remove whatever you do to them decoupaging them is out of the question, but would look awesome! But, what you can do to spruce them up is to adhere fabric to them with liquid starch or Aileens Tack it Over. With the liquid starch, you will have to soak the fabric in the starch, stretch it over the chair and let it dry. When you want to remove it, it will peel right off and you just have to wash away the starch. Aileens Glue you apply to the reverse side of the fabric, let it dry and it turns the fabric into a repositional sticker of sorts. You can also peel it off to remove, but the back of your fabric stays sticky. One final option is to make slipcovers for them. You'll have some trickster work because of the way the legs attach under the seat, but a little hook and loop tape should help out on the underside. Good luck, sounds like a fun project!"

Chairs comparable to the Herman Miller Aeron? Are there chairs that are as good or nearly as good as the Herman Miller Aeron but not as expensive?

Tony Q replied: "Take a look at the Herman Miller Mirra. It is anywhere from $150 to $600 less than an Aeron. One of the main differences is replacing the mesh and aluminum of the Aeron with polypropylene, and a reduced number of controls that still allow the chair to fit the great majority of users (the Aeron's adjustment controls are actually quite complex)"

Anyone Know When Herman Miller Started The Fiberglass Chair? Trying to figure out what year herman miller started making the fiberglass shell chair. I found some old fiberglass herman miller chairs with thick heavy cast iron bases, makes me think they are from the 1940's. Any help would be greatly appreciated

RetroRay replied: "From IDSA: "The first successfully mass-produced molded plastic chairs...were molded in fiberglass reinforced polyester and designed by Charles Eames (1907-1978) in 1948. They were introduced in 1951 by the Herman Miller Furniture Company and were produced in a variety of individual variations through 1995.""

What's with the Herman Miller chairs? The Aeron and the Mirra go for about $500 on ebay with very strong demand , and priced even higher at a real store.. are they really that good and I'm missing out, or just hype? >
jennifersuem replied: "They are really that good. Try one out!"

RepoMan18 replied: "We've got the Aerons at work, and they are very comfortable. Very fine mesh fabric. It's almost like sitting in a hammock without the unsteadiness. I'd highly recommend them."

Su Z Cue replied: "Those chairs are the best thing you will ever sit in!"

soothsayer replied: "another herman miller chair question in the past 5 min. is this company going out of business?"

JayJay replied: "I work for a design firm and they forked out the money for these chairs for all 200 of our employees. I find them very uncomfortable. You have to get use to the mesh fabric, it can affect your skin. About 3/4 of our office actually like them. Many of the people in including many of our partners actually traded their chairs for regular ones. I had to go back to the normal cheap office chair because I started to have problems with my back, even after I went through several adjustments to become more ergo. I spent one afternoon in the cheap chair and my back problems were gone. I personally find them very uncomfortable and not worth it."

Which is a better chair by Herman Miller, the Aeron or Mirra chair? I'm thinking of purchasing either an Aeron or Mirra chair by Herman Miller. I'd like to hear some reviews and recommendations.

jeffster301 replied: "Here are some: "

SEVENTYNINER replied: "I have an Aeron chair and I can't believe that there is anything better out there. It is extremely comfortable, easily adjustable and cool to the body. It's not as comfy as a soft leather chair, but for long sittings, you are much more comfortable. The Mirra chair is a great chair too, and when I tried both chairs together, my preference was Aeron."

Buzz s replied: "Why Herman Miller? I have found the chairs from Global are comfortable and they test the chairs well. I have had a couple of them over the years. The ones that were bought for me and came from other places are not as comfortable. One of the chairs was so complicated that it came with a driver disk!"

Humanscale's Freedom Chair or Herman Miller's Aeron Chair? I work from home as a web and graphic designer, and am in my office chair about 11 hours a day. I'm going to buy a new chair and am looking for something very modern / sleek / and as comfortable as possible. I'm considering either the Humanscale's Freedom chair or Herman Miller's Aeron Chair. Can someone make a recommendation as to which one of these two are best and why?

Duncan M replied: "Christopher Thats a really good question, both the Freedom and the Aeron are high quality office chairs and are likely to give you years of excellent service. Youll probably find the best thing to do is to actually try out each chair and see which you prefer. So, Id try and find a local dealer for each and see if you can try them out. I would also suggest looking at some of the better HG chairs as they too make quality stylish chairs. Take look at my article about their philosophy Youll find a review of their H04 model here. Hope that helps. Duncan M"

MikeKatz replied: "Hi Christopher, It's funny you bring this up. I am actually a consultant over in the New York City Humanscale office. We sit in the Freedom chairs all day during work. Without being biased, I will give you my expert opinion in regards to both office chairs. There is generally a lot of confusion regarding how to evaluate an office chair. It cannot be judged based on just a few minutes, which is why we stress for people to come in, just as the last person replied, and test them out in person. If you are located in the New York or Tri-State area I definitely recommend coming to one of our showrooms. Now, to compare the two: First, the Aeron is mostly an iconic chair. The technology is a bit out-dated when it comes to seating. There are knobs and levers which can be somewhat confusing for the user, and it does not have the same comfort, as well as new-age look that you seem to be looking for, as you say you sit in your chair throughout most of the day. The huge advantage of the Freedom is that it eliminates knobs, levers, and manual adjustments. Most of the time the user doesn't have it adjusted correctly for two reasons. A: They don't have time to make the adjustments and B: They don't even know what the adjustments are for The Freedom has 3 one-time settings designed custom to fit to you. It boasts a self-reclining mechanism, meaning it enables the user to recline & sit up straight, all the while moving with the user's body weight. Another beneficial feature is it's arm support. As you change tasks, the ideal position for arm support changes dramatically. For example, when keyboarding, your armrests should be out of the way. When on the telephone, your armrests should be in a high position. Not only do Freedom's armrests adjust effortlessly to encourage frequent positional changes, but they do it together, synchronously, which cannot be said for any of the other competing office chairs. After it's all said and done, however, I suggest you come down and try it out in person, and you can see for yourself how each chair feels, as well as looks aesthetically. Feel free to call me anytime over at my office. My name is Mike and my phone # here is 1-212-725-4749 Ext 147 Take care and good luck! Mike"

herman miller eames plywood chair finish? I've acquired a herman miller plywood chair and it damaged but intact and fucntional. The damages are deep gouges scratches and so forth. what type of finishes are these chairs - Shellac, Lacquer or varnish.? Thinking of reconditioning it.

darryl.ireland replied: "pretty sure its lacquer - the others would peel chip n crack"

jakeb replied: "The chair has considerable value to collectors. Some have sold for thousands of dollars. refinishing it may destroy the value. It should be refurbished by a pro."

saaanen replied: "If, in fact, it is a real Eames chair, anything YOU do to it will destroy any value. Some things are better left to professionals!"

herman miller aeron - classical vs. wave vs. tuxedo pellicle, which is better? So I finally decided that I'm tired of my back hurting from the cheap chair I use. So given that I spend a lot of time in a computer chair, I'm going to invest in a herman miller aeron chair(I've tried out the competition and I still prefer the aeron). Anyways, I've only sat in the classical pellicle material chair, but I prefer the look of the wave and the tuxedo more. My question is basically if I will experience the same comfort from each of these materials. I just want to make sure the difference is only aesthetics before I place my order, thanks.

Herman Miller replied: "Any variety of Herman Miller Aeron is better than anything you can get anywhere and that includes all Steelcase models."
